5 Ways to Stop Obsessing

We entrepreneurs are passionate about our businesses, ideas and values. There is nothing wrong with being passionate, especially when it comes to your business and livelihood. It is important to keep a pulse on your passion to ensure you don't cross over into the realm of obsession.

You may think it is natural to obsess over every aspect of your business because you want it to succeed. However, obsession differs from passion in that you stop making forward progress. Once you start obsessing, you begin spinning your wheels and wasting your effort and energy.

Know What You Value

Do you know what your company values? Is it written down or just in your head? I would encourage you to write down your company values. However, if you are only writing them down to be philosophical you've missed the point of capturing your values completely.

Getting your company values down on paper is a way to help you track against them and guide your business forward based on those ideals. Having your business values top of mind influence everything from company culture to onboarding new employees.

Make sure your values are visible and available to all within the company, but more importantly that the values are understood. It is only when your business values are understood by all within organization that you can move forward efficiently and effectively.

3 Ways to Remember Anything

Have you found yourself thinking, "Why can't I remember that?" - Let's face it, I'm sure we've all been there at some point. You may think you just have a hard time remembering names or numbers, but perhaps it is how you are trying to process the information that is the problem.

I know firsthand that when in a conversation, it is easier to focus on your response to the person talking to you than what is being said to you. This is problematic and it isn't easy to break, but it does take your focus away from absorbing the information.

Limit Your Bias

Lately, bias has been circling the media outlets. The two types of bias that I've recently read about covered gender bias and age bias. I'm not happy with the coverage I've seen, so I'm going to delve into the topic a bit more and avoid the cheesy and stereotypical responses I saw. Sure we all have a natural bias of some sort. We need a better understanding of how to limit our personal bias.

Ideally we like to think we are open-minded and open to all possibilities. I challenge you to think of scenario that would make you uncomfortable. Take a few minutes to think about why that specific scenario makes you feel that way. Welcome to your bias.

I'm not saying we can eliminate our natural biases, but we can temper them.

Change can make us uncomfortable. We need to focus on the positives that change brings to overcome our reluctance and accept the new.
